In the northern summer of 2012 efforts by the majority party in Ukraine’s parliament to amend the country’s language law so as to enable Russian to receive official status as a regional language polarised public opinion, triggering demonstrations and vociferous political confrontations.

These were but the most recent illustrations of the unresolved and controversial nature of Ukrainian linguistic, cultural and national identity throughout the country’s modern and pre-modern history. The objective of the conference “Ukraine: Language, Culture, Identity” is to illuminate this multifaceted topic as a contemporary and historical issue (and as an issue that faces Ukraine as well as people of Ukrainian culture and background outside Ukraine) from the perspectives of various scholarly disciplines.

Offers of papers addressing other topics in Ukrainian Studies will also be welcome.

Papers will be of 20 minutes duration.
