Eyes on Donbas: Politics, Places, and People

This damage is not permanent – we need to rebuild bridges. Photo: Yan Boechat.

About This Forum

Since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the occupation of some areas in Ukraine’s eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk (collectively referred to as the Donbas) by Russia’s regular and proxy forces, Ukraine’s fight for its territorial integrity has taken the lives of over 13,000 people with many more wounded and millions displaced. While the ceasefire negotiated as part of the 2015 Minsk-II agreement is formally holding, sporadic shelling and fire exchanges have been an everyday reality for the local population, with no end in sight.

As deconfliction efforts continue, so should open conversations about the prospects and processes of the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and security. Central to these conversations are scenarios for the future of the Donbas in Ukraine, the eventual fate of Russian-backed self-proclaimed republics, regional stability, and most importantly, the living conditions of civilians caught in the crossfire. In keeping with these dynamics, this forum’s objective is to provide a platform for informed analysis and commentary on the war in the Donbas, conflict resolution, reconciliation, transitional justice, and the Russia-Ukrainian war writ large.

Submission Guidelines

We invite contributions from qualified scholars, journalists, practitioners, public intellectuals, and other subject-matter experts with relevant knowledge and experience. Our goal is to produce content that is engaging and accessible to a wider audience, hence we encourage authors to avoid excessive use of academic and/or professional jargon, acronyms, or initialisms.

Contributions should be approximately 2,000 words in length.

We follow the Chicago Manual of Style for citations (either Notes and Bibliography, or Author-Date style). In the body of the text, sources should be cited with an embedded hyperlink wherever possible (for a book, a link to its Amazon or Google Books page will suffice). When citation via hyperlink is not possible, authors should first try incorporating the source in their text, or, as last resort, include it in a footnote.
